On Tuesday January 6th, members of our Wicked Awesome Wishes team traveled to Durfee Middle School in Detroit, where a big surprise was planned for the 6th and 7th grade classes. We were able to watch as 152 students from these classes filed into the gym thinking that the only thing planned was a small pep rally. Shortly after the principal spoke with the students, she gestured to the side of the bleachers where Lions Pro Bowl wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown came walking into a huge standing ovation! St. Brown gave an incredible speech about staying active in school and his studies, talking about the Rhymes with Reason educational program with the goal of improving literacy and vocab skills for children. Wicked Awesome Wishes was able to work with Staples, and provided new backpacks stuffed with all sorts of school supplies and goodies for school for each student! With the support and funding from Wicked Awesome Wishes, we hope to see this program spread and make a big learning impact for many more students not only in Metro Detroit, but across the country.
