Lady Jane’s, Wicked Awesome Wishes Helps Single Mom in Pontiac Avoid Eviction

Sometimes life takes an unexpected turn.

That is what happened to Verdina Spann. As a mother of two, Verdina was making good money at her

job of two years when her company lost the campaign she had been working on. She was laid off and found herself struggling financially after enjoying what she calls a “settled and comfortable” lifestyle.

“I was working at a bar part time, but I was living off tips,” she said. “So that was basically keeping food in my house, keeping the lights on, that sort of thing. But as far as my car, childcare, rent — all those things — they weren’t being covered and I am literally my children’s only parent.”

Verdina recently found a job as a customer care representative, but damage had already been done in terms of falling behind on her bills. When Wicked Awesome Wishes reached out to her, she was nearly $2,000 behind in rent and was one week from eviction.

“We probably could have gone to my mom’s house, but that would have been horrible to have to tell my children that they don’t have a home anymore,” said Verdina of her 3-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter. “Then trying to find the money to go somewhere (would have been tough).”

As good fortune would have it, Lady Jane’s CEO Chad Johnson and Wicked Awesome Wishes were on the lookout to help a family in Verdina’s exact situation.

Johnson and Wicked Awesome Wishes paid Verdina’s outstanding rent bill just 24 hours before she was to be evicted.

Upon learning that her rent would be taken care of, Verdina says all she could do was cry.

“I think I was crying when the call came in because I really did not know what I was going to do and where me and my children were going to go,” she said. “It was a sense of relief and I couldn’t do anything but thank God and cry.”

The Lady Jane’s team in Troy had the pleasure of meeting Verdina on her way to her new job. Johnson, VP of Salon Operations Alicia Bunch, Directors of Salon Operations Lauren Mester and Melissa Skender and PR and Marketing Director Chrissie Wywrot were immediately taken by her warm and bubbly personality.

“Verdina seemed very appreciative!” said Bunch. “It was an awesome feeling to know Wicked Awesome Wishes could help such a deserving family.”
